"Plow It On Once more" is a single by the English language rock ring Genesis, from their 1980 album Duke. It reached number 8 in the U.k. Singles Chart,[2] becoming the ring's second height 10 hit. The lyrics, by Mike Rutherford,[3] business organization a man who does nothing more than watch television. He becomes obsessed with the people he watches on information technology, believing them to be his friends.

The vocal is featured on the Flash FM station playlist in the game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.

Background [edit]

"Turn It On Again" was congenital from leftovers from projects by each member: The 2d gear up of verses was conceived by Tony Banks for A Curious Feeling: "We kind of put [Rutherford'southward riff] – the bit he didn't use on Smallcreep's Twenty-four hours, curiously plenty – with the bit I didn't use on A Curious Feeling, and put these two together. We made it much more rocky; both $.25 became much more rocky. My bit was a bit more epic, and Mike's fleck was a bit slower and a fleck more heavy metal. And then Phil gave it a much more than straightforward drum role; perhaps neither of usa would have thought that we would want that on that bit [...] We put on one or two other bits, also, that ended up from there".[4]

The vocal is characterised by a rhythmic structure uncharacteristically complex for pop music but common in the band'south progressive rock dorsum catalogue. The poetry/chorus sections alternate fourth dimension signatures, 6
iv
to 7
four
( 13
4
), while the intro and bridge sections are in 4
4
and 5
iv
( 9

). The song – written mostly past Rutherford, with help from Phil Collins – was originally much slower. Rutherford explains on the Songbook DVD: "I had this riff [plays lead riff on guitar], just at the time I was playing it like this: [plays slower]. And Phil said, 'Why don't yous try it in a faster speed?' and then he said to me, 'Do y'all realize information technology is in thirteen
8
?' and I said, 'What do y'all mean, it'southward in 13? It'southward in 4
4
, isn't information technology?' 'No, it's 13.'"

Collins confirms: "You can't dance to it. You see people trying to dance to it every now and again. They become on the off beat only they don't know why".[5] Tony Banks adds: "You can't dance or handclapping along to it because of that time signature. When we play information technology live, yous tin always see the audience getting caught out."[6]

"Plow It On Again" has been a favourite at Genesis'south shows. Consequently, the grouping's 1999 compilation Turn It On Once again: The Hits and its 2007 expanded reissue, subtitled The Tour Edition, were named after information technology, as was the band'southward 2007 Turn Information technology On Once more: The Tour reunion bout. In the 1980s, the band would adhere a medley of 1960s popular songs (referred to by the band as the "Blues Brothers" medley, as the first vocal was "Everybody Needs Somebody to Beloved"). The vocal would be returned to its anthology form for the Nosotros Can't Dance tour and the band would later regard the medley as a poor decision.[ citation needed ] Peter Gabriel played drums when he reunited with his former bandmates at 1982'southward Half-dozen of the All-time show and found himself baffled by its time signatures. "It was typical Peter: 'Oh, I can play this'," observed Tony Banks. "Just once he started playing, he kept looking around going, Oh fuck! 'Turn It On Once again' does funny things – it's truly a Genesis song."[6]

Originally written and recorded in the key of B Major, information technology was transposed down to A for the 2007 tour and further down to Grand for the 2021 tour to compensate for the lowering of Collins' vox.

The Duke Suite [edit]

"Turn it on Again" was originally a section of a long suite written by the band that was dissever into private songs before it was released. At the time, was simply an interlude between the preceding and next sections of the suite.

Chart performance [edit]

"Plough It on Again" was a moderate hit in North America, but failed to reach the Acme 40 except in regional markets such as Chicago (#31 on WLS-AM).[7] However, it was a bigger hit in Europe, peculiarly in the United kingdom where information technology reached #8.[8]
